STOP THE CUTS AT PROVIDENCE HEALTHCARE
• Providence Healthcare is a leading Toronto health care facility, specializing in rehabilitation for patients who have experienced strokes, orthopedic surgery, or lower limb amputation, or who require specialized geriatric rehabilitation, assessment and treatment. We also provide complex continuing care, long-term care and community outreach with a particular focus on addressing the medical, physical, spiritual and emotional needs of individuals with geriatric conditions.
• Currently Providence is operating with a 2.1 million dollar deficit, due to lack of funding from the McGuinty Government.
• The Mc Guinty Government has made Providence sign an accountability contract to ensure Providence operates without a deficit in the next fiscal year.
• Providence has been forced to look at strategies to reach these fiscal targets.
The Plan:
In the next few years Providence will be reducing the amount of beds currently occupied. The first unit will go from a current state of 45 beds to 30 beds. This will result in a reduction of 15 beds in total. This transformation will continue until all units in the hospital are transformed. The total number of beds closed will be roughly 112 when the transformation is complete. Providence is still committed to servicing the same number of patients throughout a course of a year under the new design. Patients are going to be put back into the community sooner, and offered services such as (for profit) Homecare and Providence Out Patient Services. It is no secret that the current state of home care services in our province is inadequate to say the least. The responsibility of caring for our loved ones in need of day to day healthcare services currently provided at Providence will rest on the shoulders of spouses, children, and family members.
